Pole dancing has been around for longer than you may think......

Pole performing can be traced back thousands of years to China. The Chinese would place a wooden pole into the ground and perform a series of acrobatic moves for the Emperor. You can now see such performances in the famous Cirque Du Soleil, however, the pole dancing we are most familiar with originated in the 1920's, at the height of the American Depression. Traveling fairs would go from town to town entertaining the crowds. One particular tent housed the erotic Hoochi Coochi dancers. The term Hoochi Coochi was derived from the unique swivel hip movement performed by the Hoochi Coochi dancers, the equivalent of the bump and grind of today. The girls would dance suggestively on a small stage in front of a cheering crowd. The dancer would approach the tent pole and begin to dance with it. The tent pole evolved into the dancing pole, and it still exists today, albeit in a more technically advanced and acceptable form.

Pole dancing graduated from tents to bars as burlesque became more acceptable in the 1950's. From that period until the 1980's, the art form went relatively unnoticed. Eventually, pole dancing and striptease had a resurgence in Canada and the United States. The 1990's ushered in a peaked interest when, Ms. Fawnia Mondey from Canada, took the art of pole dancing and began teaching it to everyday women.

The years 2000 - 2009 have been the most promising years for pole exercising as the sport continues to come into it's ow
